Adam Liang

Associate – Listed Equities

When did you first join Impax and what was your role – i.e. intern
I joined Impax in 2018 as an intern working on the carbon project. The goal of the project was to analyse carbon emissions of companies in the MSCI Materials sector that will inform weightings in a paper portfolio. The portfolio’s composition is based on the MSCI ACI Index but with overweight companies that are less carbon intensive.

What were your first impressions when you joined the firm?
I started off in Impax’s London office, everyone is friendly and supportive. I started fresh out of my Masters, there was a lot of support from everyone in Impax to learn in the job and progress your career.

Since then, how has your role changed?
After my internship, I joined the HK office as an analyst. I am now a member of the Asia strategy portfolio team, covering several companies across the Asia region, mainly in the Consumer Staples and Discretionary Sectors.

Please tell us a bit about what are you enjoying about your role
The role is dynamic and challenging. One of the most interesting parts is the process of discovering and learning about various unique solution providers that can have a positive impact on society.

What do you like most about Impax?
There isn’t a barrier to communicate with anyone in Impax. Impax has a transparent and flat organisational culture, which makes sure that everyone’s voice is heard and if there are issues they can be communicated to relevant groups.

Can you share with us a career highlight
I was promoted to an official PRM member of the Asia Environmental Strategy team last year.

Any advice for anyone who is applying for a vacancy at Impax?
Impax is always looking for unique ideas and diversity in thought, focus on this to differentiate yourself amongst other candidates.

What does a day-to-day look like for you?
Usually a morning coffee followed by reading on any news relevant to my stock coverage. Doing various types of stock analysis, idea generation, portfolio-related discussions with colleagues. Sometimes there are meetings with companies and external analysts.

Thea Chung

Sustainability Research & ESG Analyst – Listed Equities

When did you first join Impax and what was your role
I first joined Impax in June 2020 as a summer intern in the London Listed Equity (LE) team working mainly with Paolo. I was responsible for undertaking revenue analysis for ~2,000 listed companies in the Environmental Technologies (ET) and Water Universes to update the companies’ thematic exposure and decide whether they were fit for inclusion. Meanwhile, I was writing my thesis in collaboration with Impax on the EU Taxonomy (a new EU regulation aimed at redirecting capital flows towards sustainable investment and combating greenwashing) for my master’s degree in Environmental Technology (Business & the Environment) at Imperial College London.

What were your first impressions when you joined the firm?
People were really welcoming and friendly! I worked from home throughout the entire internship due to the pandemic and hardly had any face-to-face interaction with anyone at Impax. However, many colleagues reached out to me for a chat online and made the effort to make me feel welcome and integrated into the team and the firm. To my surprise, my first ever virtual internship worked out very well, thanks to the tremendous support provided by the HR team, IT team and of course the LE team.

Since then, how has your role changed?
After I finished the internship, I was very grateful that Impax offered me the role of Sustainability Research Analyst in the LE team starting from October 2020. I had the opportunity to build on the knowledge and skills I acquired during the internship to help expand the Climate Universe from the initial ~200 companies to ~600. In addition to thematic universe and taxonomy related research, I also started doing ESG analyses of investee companies, and later joined the ESG team.

Please tell us a bit about what are you enjoying about your role
As an environmentalist who is passionate about environmental sustainability, I enjoy learning about new and innovative sustainable solutions and technologies and keeping up with the latest developments and trends in the sustainability and ESG space. In my role, I enjoy staying up to date about those things, so that I can understand and incorporate them into the sustainability research in my daily work. I find it very fulfilling and meaningful to be able to combine my passion with my contributions to Impax.

What do you like most about Impax?
I share Impax’s investment philosophy and values, which align with my personal aspirations to be part of the solution to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable economy. As a career changer who had previously worked in another industry in Hong Kong for some years, I came to the UK in 2019 to study a master’s in environmental studies with the intention to pivot into a new career where I am better positioned to tackle sustainability challenges and drive positive impact.

Can you share with us a career highlight
A highlight to me was the EM Taxonomy 2.0 project. The Impax’s Environmental Markets Classification System that underpins the environmentally themed strategies changed on 1 Jan 2022. The change came about as new opportunities that support the transition to a more sustainable economy was coming to market and reaching scale due to new and evolving technologies and business models, a more supportive policy environment, as well as market demand. It was time for us to upgrade the existing Environmental Taxonomy to reflect the growth, evolution, and breadth of opportunities in environmental markets. As a regular user of the original taxonomy to assess companies’ environmental exposure since I was an intern, I was heavily involved in reviewing and developing the new EM Taxonomy. I enjoyed being part of the debate about what should and should not be included in the new taxonomy and doing related research.

Any advice for anyone who is applying for a vacancy at Impax?
Demonstrate your values that align with Impax’s core beliefs (Be the solution; A passion for excellence; All voices valued; Doing better together; Building a common future). Being a good team player and collaborating as “one global team” is particularly key as Impax is growing so quickly and expanding our global footprint. A passion for sustainability is always a plus, if not a must!

What does a day-to-day look like for you?
My day-to-day varies but generally it involves doing company analyses (thematic exposure and ESG), reviewing others’ ESG analyses, working on projects (e.g. Climate Taxonomy 2.0, SDG mapping in the master breakdown file, EU sustainable finance regulations) and collaborating with others both internally and externally. Since coming back to the office in March, I have been interacting with my colleagues more. Apart from having meetings, we sometimes go to lunch or do yoga together which makes my day-to-day more fun!

When did you first join Impax and what was your role – i.e. intern
I first joined Impax in the summer of 2019 as an intern for the Sustainability Research team. I was researching impact measurement and analyzing peer impact reporting.

What were your first impressions when you joined the firm?
When I first joined the firm, I was struck by how passionate everyone was about the company’s mission and about their passions outside of the workplace. They were equally as excited to talk about either!

Since then, how has your role changed?
I now work on the RFP team/Institutional Sales Support team.

Please tell us a bit about what are you enjoying about your role
I love that my role interacts with all the moving pieces at Impax – I feel like I have a much greater appreciation for the crucial role that every group plays in the company’s success.

What do you like most about Impax?
Easy – the people! Working with such passionate, dedicated and smart co-workers is the best motivator and makes it easy to work hard.

Can you share with us a career highlight
It has been a highlight to work on large institutional RFPs that involve everyone from the most senior to the most junior – these opportunities are always hard work but showcase how we operate as a team at Impax and how every person is important.

Any advice for anyone who is applying for a vacancy at Impax?
Ask questions! Both about the company and about the people. I’ve found that Impax really prioritizes team dynamics and, when applying, it is important to get to know your potential teammates and let them get to know you.

What does a day-to-day look like for you?
Sounds like a cliché but every day really is different. Some days I attend client and prospect meetings, while other days I’m working on a big RFP all day and some days are a healthy mix!

Operations Analyst, 20th July 2018

What were your first impressions when you joined the firm?
My first impression of Impax was definitely very positive. I felt welcome and appreciated in the team and generally in the firm. Everyone was extremely busy but never too busy to answer the numerous questions that I had, being a new joiner.

I don’t have a particular career highlight to be honest but I can say I am very proud of how much I have learnt and developed in my years at Impax and grateful to work for a company that recognizes and values employees’ efforts and commitment.

Introduction

As a specialist asset manager investing in the transition to a more sustainable economy, equity, diversity and inclusion (E,D&I) is fundamental to how we invest as well as how we operate as an company.

We specialise in investing in companies that leaders on human capital issues and we are a pioneer in gender lens investing. Our Sustainability & ESG experts are focused on the understanding the intersection of equity, diversity and inclusion and how a diverse workforce, where people feel a sense of belonging and acceptance, can drive creativity and problem-solving, leading to better decisions, more positive results and greater innovation. This creates a positive feedback loop where we are constantly both working with and learning from investee and potential investee companies, as well as from our wide network of industry partners.

Equity, diversity & inclusion is also critical to our own organisational excellence; our vision is to continue to build an inclusive, equitable culture where everyone feels they belong, are valued as individuals, and can thrive – bringing all aspects of themselves to work.

While we firmly believe that responsibility for E,D&I rests on everyone’s shoulders, we also have a global E,D&I Group responsible for further integrating E,D&I into our culture. The E,D&I Group is co-sponsored by the Chief Executive; President, North America; and a Non-Executive Director and is accountable to the Executive Committee and Board of Directors. The Group is actively working across themes of:

  • Inclusion, education and engagement
  • Equity, governance and accountability
  • Talent attraction, retention and progression
  • Social impact through partner organisations and public policy initiatives
